What’s new for SharePoint 2016 on premises

SharePoint has undergone many changes since its first release in 2001. Now with its latest on-premises version (SharePoint Server 2016) released, organisations should be looking at how to move their existing SharePoint 2013 platform to the latest 2016 version along with solutions built on the platform.

So what makes SharePoint 2016 on premises a compelling platform for your organisation to use? Here are some of the new features introduced with SharePoint 2016.

Mobile Experience

This is one of the key enhancements across the SharePoint platform. In my opinion it’s one of the most important features for end users, as it provides the ability to interact with content stored in SharePoint sites from any device, by introducing a Responsive User Interface Package for SharePoint on premises. Watch this great video explaining the Responsive User Interface for SharePoint from MSDN (Channel 9 Team).

Compliance Features

For managing documents and compliance needs of organisations, SharePoint 2016 now provides document deletion capability and in-place hold policies. SharePoint 2016 also provides the ability to manage sensitive content such as Identify and search for sensitive content in both SharePoint Server 2016 and OneDrive documents.

My Sites are now connected as One Drive for Business

...with the ability to connect to SharePoint Online in a Hybrid Scenario. This means users are able to sync their working documents across devices and access documents while on the move

Cloud Hybrid Search

With this capability organisations can now leverage best of both worlds by combining search results from on premises data sources and Office365/SharePoint online sites.  You can index all of your crawled content, including on-premises content, to your search index in Office 365. You can set up the crawler in SharePoint Server 2016 to crawl the same content sources and use the same search connectors in Office SharePoint Server 2007, SharePoint Server 2010, and SharePoint Server 2013. Full hybrid solution options are outlined in detail in the Hybrid Solution Centre for SharePoint Server.
