Training afternoon - Open to anyone

It was with a little trepidation over my ability to keep up with the super fit adventure racers that I agreed to participate on a training afternoon. I have previously watched first hand with awe and wonder the physical abuse the team put their bodies through on race day. The level of endurance is incredible so my angst was somewhat justified. Regardless I convinced myself that the hours in the gym would help to get me through and off to the wild West Coast I went.

A downhill walk through the canopy of trees into the valley floor was really lovely and purely designed to give you a false sense of this will all be “just fine”. Having reached the point where we the walkers meet the team who had taken a longer run in, I was feeling pretty comfortable. But….conditions were to change radically. We were headed up stream, 2.5 hours upstream.  Into the water we went slipping and sliding over the rocky bottom and as we hit each plateau it meant negotiating around the resulting waterfalls by clambering out of the water and hauling oneself up the banks. Thank goodness for Martin ever the gentleman there to give us girls a helping hand when needed or a push from behind in some cases! The scenery all the way was absolutely fantastic and well worth effort.

The boys couldn't resist the rope swing at one stop and without delay shirts were tossed to one side and these grown men were boys once more trying to outdo each other on their swing and water entry technique.

From the top of the stream the team set off for an extended run back to base while the “trampers” headed back up hill and down dale to the start point. Remember that lovely downhill walk into the valley? Well those very same stairs greeted me on the way out and all of sudden the scenery was not nearly as important as breathing while making the 20 minute climb back to the car park.

Arriving back to the house unscathed except for a few minor scratches I was rewarded with a hot shower and a glass of wine the perfect end to a perfect afternoon. This was an amazing experience and I would not hesitate to do it again. Next time I hope more of you will come and join us.
