New automated external defibrillator (AED)

Theta now has an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) in our Auckland office. 15 staff as well as two from a neighbouring firm have attended a CPR/AED training session, and we’ve informed our close neighbours that we have an AED available for use if required.

The inspiration for this initiative was long-standing Theta consultant Paul Casey, who suffered a heart attack when out cycling one morning, and was saved by CPR performed by fellow cyclists.

Says Paul: “It brought home, if you know what to do then you can help but if you don't then you could watch someone die right in front of you.”

A refresher course in CPR was high on Paul’s list of priorities once he recovered, and was top of mind for many of his colleagues too after hearing what happened.

Says Theta CEO Rob Lee:

"What happened to Paul made us stop and think what we could all do to be prepared in this kind of situation. The AED purchase and CPR training means we are now better equipped, should the worst happen.”

Stefnie Davies, who attended the training and is herself a former paramedic, said:

“It was fascinating to see the different devices now available, and to see how, with such a small effort, you could save someone’s life. It’s really empowering for the team.” She adds “I’ve now downloaded the AED locations app – I travel a lot – so wherever I am in NZ, I’ll have at my fingertips the location of the nearest AED.”
