Cannibal Creek

Al had figured out another adventure and had a list of 13 check points for us to plot on the map. The route to the first few seemed obvious but then there was a big gap between 6 and 7 with no track marked – just Cannibal Creek. I figured we'd worry about the rest when/if we got there.

We headed north up the top end of Piha beach and over to White's beach. Then some coasteering around the rocks to the next bay. Almost there and we were faced with a steep rock wall into the surf. We decided that caution was the best strategy and reluctantly turned back to take a more inland and steeper route to Anawhata Beach.

At the north end of Parera Bay (north of Anawhata Beach) we found a sketchy track, unmarked on our map, that seemed to head in the direction of Cannibal Creek.

The track took us inland (NE) up and down some hills before meeting up with the creek. Then up the creek, wading and bush bashing, to find some stunning waterfalls and views. Eventually we branched SE off down another overgrown unmarked track which took us to the Kuataika Track. More hills and a couple of stream crossings got us on to the Anawhata Road, then down to Whites track and back to the cars at North Piha.

Just another day in paradise…
