Over the next five years, most of Genesis Energy’s 500,000 electricity customers will have their existing analog meters replaced with new Advanced Meters. Genesis Energy asked long-term business intelligence and software development partner Theta Systems to develop the behind-the-scenes technology to help make the upgrade a success.

We developed a web application – the ‘Advanced Metering Scheduler’ (AMS) – to schedule the installations of the new meters throughout New Zealand.  And our business intelligence solution – including an intuitive dashboard, detailed reports and ad-hoc analysis capability – ensures that Genesis Energy always knows exactly where they are at with the rollout.

“The meter upgrade couldn’t begin until we had a good system in place to manage and schedule installations. Theta, with their understanding of our business, systems and dataquickly delivered a robust solution that is easy to use.  The reporting dashboard is intuitive, and we can see at a glance our rollout status and anything that requires action”  Peter McComish, Energy Delivery Manager -  Genesis Energy

The dashboard is part of a complete data warehouse and business intelligence solution for Genesis Energy, integrating new data into their data warehouse and developed on an existing Cognos 8 platform.  The solution provides critical information to help manage and schedule the meter installations.  Other components include pre-built reports and the ability to perform ad-hoc analysis.

The AMS web application is a custom Java solution using the latest AJAX technology to provide good usability.  We developed the application using a 3-layer technology stack – Iceface (user interface), Spring (middle tier) and Hibernate (database tier) – while the Agile development methodology provided maximum flexibility and accelerated delivery.
